1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) is a newly discovered biotechnological treatment, also named as the ethylene blocking agent (or freshening agent, ethylene inhibitor, plant growth regulator, etc.), by blocking off the ethylene receptors of the plants, to avoid the attack of ethylene (endogenous or exogenous); thus preventing the fresh perishable produces (fruits, vegetables, foliages, and flowers) from fast ripening or senescence.
The 1-MCP (1-methylcyclopropene) has been widely tested and applied in variety of species of crops. Most of the tests are successful with very encouraging future for applications. In the post harvest processes for horticultural industries, by applying the 1-MCP, the high loss rate can be significantly reduced .
The 1-MCP’s application is quite easy - just spray it and then leave. When spraying, the 1-MCP will automatically release into the air, and the crops are surrounded with 1-MCP mixed air. It is so called “fumigation”, or technically called 1-MCP treatment. In order to have a thorough and successful result, a air-sealed space is required.
In the post harvest processes of high-end horticultural and floricultural industries, the crops losses become a worldwide issue. The highly confirmed 1-MCP technology can greatly avoid the crops from the unnecessary losses. It brings a lot of benefit to the growers, the packers, and the marketers; and to improve the efficiency of agricultural supply chain worldwide.
Furthermore, thanks to the huge efforts contributed by hundreds of scientists worldwide, the technology has been fast expanded into the new fields of applications.
